How to Plan a Griffith Park Picnic

Instant Sunday funday plans for you and the crew.

We know you’re wondering how to have the best picnic in LA. Not because we’re mind readers, but because we’ve become something of picnic connoisseurs in recent months and want to share the experience with you. It’s honestly such a simple activity that includes our other favorite simple activity called food. And you don’t even need a specific reason to make like Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson in Vicky Cristina Barcelona to eat al fresco.

But first, your LA picnic needs to take place in a quintessential LA location. That’s why we’re suggesting a Griffith Park picnic. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better backdrop, and it’s perfectly convenient for anyone who lives east of the 405. Heck, you can even do a Griffith Park hike first (OK, overachiever) and reward yourself with delicious eats when you’re finished.

We know. We’re full of great ideas.

Within Griffith Park you’ll find actual designated picnic areas like Crystal Springs Picnic Area, Old LA Zoo Picnic Area, and Mineral Wells Picnic Area. You can also post up in the grassy knolls at the Griffith Park entrance near Greek Theater. If you’re willing to pack up your food and gear then hike to a destination picnic, Amir’s Garden is outfitted with picnic tables and offers gorgeous views. There’s also lots of flowers for your ‘gram game.

So now that you have your location options on lock, it’s time to think about the picnic swag. Don’t have a picnic basket? We figured. And we got you. Our park picnic bundle is packed with everything you need to picnic like Julie Andrews a la Sound of Music — but better. Yes, it even includes acrylic wine glasses because we know you can’t dine outdoors without the rosé or hard cider or small-batch triple IPA that’s only available every two years. Consider this your go-to for date nights and small group friend hangs.

For an elevated experience — one that requires someone who feels comfy operating a grill — the portable grill and picnic bundle has your name on it. Since there’s literal fire involved, you’ll want to set this up at a designated picnic area for the sake of your eyebrows and LAFD. Consider this the ideal option for larger groups, birthday party picnics and any time you’re craving hot dogs (or Impossible burgers, we don’t discriminate) roasted on an almost open fire.

Aside from the obvious alcohol that you’ll be toting in that super stylish picnic basket, you might want to consider tossing in things like bug spray, sunscreen and a sweater. The outdoors are unpredictable, so… You’re welcome.

And there ya have it. Picnic Los Angeles style has never been easier. (Although, we purposely left out the cooking part. Need some recipe inspo? Read our picks in How to be Extra at Hollywood Bowl.)
