“Totally. Because my place is so tiny (under 500 square feet!), I have to be very intentional about what I bring home. I can really only own enough supplies for one hobby… and everything else I have to borrow, rent, or go without. It hasn’t actually been that difficult for me as I’m a somewhat minimalistic person—I don’t care to have a microwave or a TV or a closet full of clothes—but it did require some creative finagling to make day-to-day life work.”
“At first, yes. I knew the general aesthetic I was going for (mid-century bohemian, I’d call it), but with such a limited space, it was hard to bring it to life. Luckily, my background is in home styling and DIY production, so I was able to work some magic. My easiest solution was to pile the bed with an obscene amount of throw pillows so it can act as a second seating area without making people feel weird about chillin’ on my bed. I‘ve hosted a wine night with a few friends and everyone agreed the setup felt cozy and comfortable!”
“Know what's important to you and make living choices based on that. For me, I knew I wanted a place where I could host friends and not feel cramped – so my place is set up for that.”
“I get asked about my set of lockers all the time. I actually got them in an auction at my elementary school back in Iowa! Both my mom and I used these lockers when we were kids, so they hold a lot of sentimental value. They fit perfectly in the little alcove they live in, so it kind of feels like this studio was made for me. I'm very deliberate about what I own and display, so it really is an embodiment of who I am and what I value.”
Chelsea is the epitome of what it means to live in Joymode: She spends her time and money on the things that add value to her life, but don’t clutter her apartment. Like most folks, she doesn’t have space for products that she’ll only use a couple times a year (think: Deep carpet cleaner, fondue set, projector screen).
If you’re living with limited space but want do to a spring cleanout to make your apartment as Insta-worthy as Chelsea’s, check out the bundles below:
